Williamsburg - Under the Redcoat
From June 25 to July 4, 1781, British forces under the command of General Lord Cornwallis occupied Williamsburg and imposed martial law on the town's residents. This special weekend reenactment begins on Friday as the British Dragoons, accompanied by a patrol of light infantry, enter the Historic Area near the Capitol. After replacing the American flag with the Union Jack, the patrol proceeds to Market Square and secures the area for an encampment of the occupation troops. More British army units converge on the town throughout the afternoon. Martial law is declared and the terms of occupation are announced to the townspeople. Activities include musket drills, artillery batteries, dragoon or cavalry maneuvers, and surgeons caring for the wounded in a military field hospital. The reenactment draws to a close late Sunday afternoon as Cornwallis marches his troops out of the city to meet Continental Army forces on the field of battle. Colonial Williamsburg.
